Preoperative Consultation

Prior to oral surgery, we request that every patient be seen for a pre-surgical consultation. The preoperative consultation appointment allows you to meet and become familiar with Dr. John, and his staff. Dr. John will explain any proposed treatment and treatment option at this time. The consultation provides time for thorough review of your health history, examination, digital radiographs (x-rays) if needed, and review of the risks and benefits of upcoming surgical procedures. Occasionally, surgery can be done the same day as the consultation. However a complex medical history or treatment plan will require an evaluation and a second appointment. Examples of conditions and medicines that alter our treatment include:

  • Artificial heart valve
  • Resting angina pain
  • Heart murmur
  • Pacemakers
  • Diabetes
  • Dialysis
  • Long term steroid use
  • Coumadin, Aspirin or other blood thinners
  • Prosthetic joints
  • Bleeding disorders
  • MAO inhibitors
  • Pregnancy
  • Latex allergy
  • Medicine allergies
  • Buophosphate (i.e.Fosomax) used for bone conditions
  • Recent use of diet pills

During the consultation visit, the patient will complete the appropriate surgical consent forms. We will also take this opportunity to review any financial or insurance questions, (bring necessary forms).

Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:

  • A  list of medication, vitamins and herbal supplements you are currently taking
  • Your surgical referral slip and any x-rays if applicable

(If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays, you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary, they can be taken at our office.)

IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the consultation appointment and for the surgery appointment.
